How to add one new active at a time.

Add one new formula at a time so you can see what really works.

Most routine trouble starts the same way: three new products arrive on the same day, and when the skin protests a week later, nobody knows which bottle caused it. The fix is unglamorous but reliable — change one thing at a time, and give it room to show you what it does.

Start with a patch test

Apply a small amount behind the ear or along the jawline for three evenings running. If there is no stinging, spreading redness or new breakouts concentrated in that spot, you can bring the formula into the full routine. A patch test is not a guarantee, but it catches the obvious mismatches early.

Follow a two-week cadence

Use the new treatment every third evening in week one, every other evening in week two, and nightly only from week three if the skin stays calm. Actives such as niacinamide and exfoliating acids reward patience far more than enthusiasm. Keep the rest of the routine boring while you do this — the same cleanser, the same moisturizer, the same sunscreen.

Write down the date you start. Memory is a poor witness.

Know the signs to pause

  • Tightness or stinging within minutes of application, three days in a row.
  • New clusters of small bumps where you applied the product.
  • Makeup or sunscreen suddenly pilling where it never did before.

Any of these means the same thing: stop the new product, return to your base routine for a week, and reintroduce half as often — or not at all. There is no prize for pushing through irritation.

A sample first fortnight

Evenings one to fourteen with a niacinamide serum look like this: serum on days 1, 4 and 7; days 8, 10 and 12; then nightly from day 13 if all is well. Mornings stay untouched throughout — cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, done. If you keep notes, record the date, the frequency and one line on how the skin felt. That page becomes your personal ingredient glossary.
